Pent-up demand shows in Amazon UK sales

Practicology’s latest weekly Amazon sales figures have highlighted how products across a broad range of categories continue to see sales growth in Europe through the COVID-19 lockdown.

Our Amazon UK sales have seen growth over the past six weeks, both overall and for a wide selection of brands that we sell. While strong sales for the vitamins and supplements brands that we stock could be expected, we are also seeing robust demand for non-essential items.

In the UK – and several other European markets – we see continued strong demand for our brands selling a variety of consumer electronics, beauty, kitchen and sports clothing. This is despite the slightly longer delivery timeframes being offered by Amazon in most markets for the products that it fulfils.

While consumers are being cautious with their cash, our Amazon UK sales show clear signs of pent-up demand while non-essential retail stores remain closed and many other ecommerce sites are operating at a reduced capacity. You can read more analysis of the products that consumers in the UK are searching for in our latest blog on the topic.

From our Amazon sales data for last week we note the following week-on-week results:

  • Sales values rose in the UK (+14.6%) and Spain (+4.1%), but fell by a small amount in Germany (-0.6%) and Italy (-5.7%);
  • Sales volumes fell more significantly in France where Amazon continues to face legal challenges to how it operates, down 35.7%. However, weekly French sales are still ahead of early February thanks to continued demand for essential items.

Amazon has announced that its French warehouses will remain closed until 5th May following on from last week’s court hearing.
